interview s Antti s Amphi festa @www.anttifiziert.pytalhost.de We had the opportunity to meet Antti at the Amphi festival at 23/07/2006 A = Antti S = Susi N = Nieni (Aline) S: So, first question A: Yes S: The name of our homepage is Anttifiziert, which means anttifected. You know antti – fected A: Yeah.. what do you mean? S: That’s the name of our homepage... N: And it’s a mixture of your name.. A: Name of what? N: Of our homepage! A: Ooh, ok. N: And it is a mixture of your name and the word infected A: Aaah, ok, ok S: Yeah. Like Antti – fected A: oooh, ok, like Antti *points at himself* S: Yes, and we are infected. A: Oook, now I understand. Sorry, my stupidness. N: What do you think about it? A: I.. I think it’s cool *smiles* I really like it. Now, after when I realised that. Stupid, uhm, slowly mind. S: noo N: And the fans of you in Germany call themselves Anttifizierte A: Alright N: So anttifected A: Cool, it’s really nice. S: So, do you prefer being on stage or working in the studio? A: Well, both... both are nice. There are always two sides of the coin. I mean, uhm, on a studio it’s cool, because you don’t go to a studio so often, so when you go to do some record you’re always like excited, because of the new songs and new, maybe new sound or new whatever it is. It’s always new, so it’s interesting. Uhm... then of course the livesituation is.. there’s so much energy and always... I think audience makes the gig. I mean it depends so much of the audience. Even we’re playing the same songs it can be like really totally catastrophe or then it could be like totally success and huge rock’n’roll experience. It depends so much. But maybe, uhm, we are, I think we’re better when we are on the stage and when we are live. I mean, I myself totally enjoy it so much. And it’s so cool when audience realises that those guys are enjoying about what they do on the stage. Then it gives a feedback also to audience which gives a feedback to us and it makes it, you know, crazy. N: And then, next question: Which of your bass-guitars is your favourite one? A: Guitars... bass-guitars? N: Yes A: Aah, there’s only a few, which I like most. I found this Arrria Prrro Explore Bass modell from Japan, which I had to bought right away. I think it was about two years ago and since that that has been my number one bass on the concerts. But I also use this black SG-bass which has this white crosses on the neck. Naive is the one song I played. It’s because of this low-tuned. Also this... almost every new song of our upcoming album anorectic has recorded of that bass, because of the low-tune and they’re much rougher and heavier, uhm, those new songs. So when we are gonna start play this new songs I think I have to, you know, take that for my number one bass. N: And, do some of them have names? Because some musicians give their guitars names. A: Oh, well, this SG, that black one, I actually bought it from Archzie, he’s the 69 Eyes bass-player. So that bass is Archzies old. Like it’s a tribute to Tommy Iommi, Black Sabbath guitarist. Same modell with these white crosses. Then this Arrria Prro. It’s... it’s called Arrria Prro *smiles* exploded. It’s the same modell James Hetfield use to play with these guitars, which I like very much. And it’s also good sounding. Then I have a couple of more... I have Washburn, which was my first bass ever. I bought it from one girl from Tampere about 6 or 7 years ago. We use to call it Tassu, because there is a tassu (Pfote) mark on this body. And, uh, then I have this flame, we use to call it flame, because it’s a black Ibanez, which is painted by flames, which I actually haven’t played in a couple of years anymore. But I used to have it in first moment of our love video, finnish version. If I remember right... yeah, and I do. I used it on that video last time *smiles*. S: So, with whom of the band do you get along best? With whom do you argue most? A: We get along each other with everyone. It’s, it’s of course, you have to if you.. S: .. yeah, but you’re often seen with Nakki, for example A: Yeah, well, we are, yeah, there’s a few people, of course, in our free time, that we use to hang around with more than the other guys. For different reasons. For example I’m hanging around with Jonne on our free time, most of because he’s living near by me. And also Nakki, yes, and we have the same hobbies, we use to hang around very much in bars and also go to clubs to see other bands, with Nakki and that’s really cool. N: Are you sometimes a bit annoyed by the fact that people judge you by your look and image and not only by your music? A: Uhm, sorry, I have to come. *goes closer to N, grabs the paper* N: This one *points at the question* A: *staring at the paper* *points at the question* This one? N: Yeah... A: *reads the question – sloooowly* ok... *continues reading* Aaah, ok. (the question was: Are you sometimes a bit annoyed by the fact that people judge you by your look and image and not by your music, so that talking about an imagechange becomes more important than talking about the new album, or do you sometimes enjoy to play with that image and set out to be this "stylish" group?) Well sometimes it’s, for, like bands like us, for example, and the way we are looking. Sometimes it’s, it makes me feel that people are considering both to how, the way we look than the way we sound. And then it’s, uhm, it’s, maybe, can be, like bad thing for the music. I mean it’s not fair that the music doesen’t get the... the... you know S: ..Attention... A: ...Attention, yes, that music earns, but in the other hand, I think it’s alway important that the band looks the way they sound and opposite, they sound the way they look. You know, so it’s like, go hand in hand *wags his arms*, the way they sound and the way they look. So it’s more, it’s more, uhm... *thinks* is it truely? I mean the word... uhm... well I can’t remember the word, but you know what I mean. S + N: yeah, yeah.. A: So that’s basically about what I think about that. S: Do you plan your different tattoos for a long time.. A: No! S: ...before getting them or are you just seeing them... A: I’m taking most everything just *flips his fingers* you know, I have this idea for one moment and then I do it. S: Did you ever regret it? A: No, actually, I think life would be, life is too, you know, short to regret anything. I haven’t regret so far... I actually have to say, my newest tattoo, I take it the day before yesterday on my neck *takes his basecap off and shows his neck* and it’s a Finnish word and it’s PERUS. N: And what does it mean? A: Uhm.. one of my good friends Teemu from Uniklubi, it’s a finnish band – Uniklubi, he also plays bass, he took the same on his neck. We both did the same really simply A B C’s (letters), uhm, PERUS, and it means, it’s a word, if you translate it it’s BASIC, but it’s so hard to explain, uhm... what it means. You know that word... it’s a, it... it depends of the situation, when you use it. It is kind of an inside joke, that we have. And it’s actually, I think it’s made by Lex Luther from our Gbfam record company in Finland some years ago and he used to say “ok, perus, perus, perus” in every situation *smiles* and it has grown up, the word has been living since that. And then we just thought: “Hey, let’s fuckin’ save the PERUS-tattoos on our back.” For example, uhm, well I can give you one, uuhm, example: If I’m so drunk that I pass out, you know *shows it – makes funny sounds* So the neck says, I don’t have to say anything, the neck says all: Basic situation. N: *laughs* Good idea. How long are you able to keep one hairstyling before you have an inner pressure to change it? Because you often change your hairstyle... A: I... you know, it’s hard to say right now, because if I got this feeling I have changed and I will, but now I don’t have it, so I don’t know when it... maybe it comes maybe tomorrow, or maybe after 5 years. I don’t know, but I think actually this *grabs one dreadlock* is not so much different than my yet.. my look before that and I actually like that also very much, but *laughs* those.. they weren’t dreadlocks, I don’t know what the word is... N: Rastas in Germany... A: Oh, Rastas. But normally I heard that you should keep them like one month to three, and I had them more than one year. Maybe one and a half year. So they *laughs and shows how they got longer and longer* had granded off my head without any, doing anything, so I had to do something, so then I made this. And these are, I like dreadlocks because it’s so easy and you know, you don’t have to do almost anything about that. N: Do you think that you’re stuck on red forever now? Because you really like the red hair. So do you think... A: So far so cool. I don’t know. It comes by the feelings. But yeah, I like red colour, so why not *smiles*. And it’s not.. also so I mean you can see, if now you take a look, you can see many brown hairs, many blonde hairs, many black hairs, but maybe only one *points at S* or two red hair, so it’s like.. N: ...special... A: Yeah, maybe a little bit more special... hopefully *laughs* I don’t know. N: *laughs too* It is. S: What was the craziest thing that happend to you because of a fan, or a fan has done to you or for you? A: Uhm... let me think... Uhm... I don’t know, maybe... Well, there’s... we have so great fans... they’re like... uhm... I remember maybe three years ago, or four years ago some fan has made this one teddybear, by himself by hand and then she gave this teddybear to me and I was like... “Ok... thank you”, “but no, Antti, that’s not all! Take out the inside!” And ok, then I opened it and at the inside of this teddybear there was a CD, that the girl has made himself by the teddybears covers and also some teddybears songs but there this CD includes the songs that I personally like most. I don’t have any clue from what, uhm, where they knew what songs I like but there were for example bands like Foofighters, Motцrhead, Stone sour, bands like Rob Zombie, and Marilyn Manson and everytime only one song by one artist and everytime the song which they had picked from some artist was my favourite song. And after five years I still haven’t, don’t have a clue how they could knew it. Maybe they have like without telling me asked some of my friends.. I don’t know. But.. and also nowadays I have seen some fans took those Negative-tattoos. I don’t know, maybe because of my back or I don’t, oh Larry has also Negative-Tattoo. So that’s always nice, when somebody... you know. When we were in Ruisrock in Finland festival and some gils just show me *points at his arm* hey take out my new tattoo and it was Negative-tattoo and it’s also nice... N: And which German city do you like most? A: Well, I like Berlin, but you know.. this is, this is not.. you know... everytime, no matter where we are... are we in Kцln or Bochum or Berlin, we usually don’t have so much free time to spend around or hanging somewhere, anywhere, because of interviews and radio and concerts and fotoshootings as you.. stuff like that and also the day when we are leaving always time when the airplane leaves like 5 o’clock in the morning, so... But Berlin was so nice, but I think this whole country so far or at least the cities that I have been so far, it’s really nice. S: What’s your favourite German food? A: German food? Well, I don’t know, is there any special Germany-food? S: I don’t know... A: So far I have, basically, eaten *laughs* Pizzas and McDonalds hamburgers. Those are kind of, like Germany-foods S: So you like fastfood? A: Yes, I haven’t eaten anything than only fastfood in the past four years. So... *laughs* Pizzas and chinese food. S: But you don’t have a *points at her stomach* A: *smiles* *looks at his stomach* Well, not so much. Maybe because good genes. S+N: *laugh* A: Is it genes? S+N: Yeah.. A: I mean.. uhm, which you take from your parents. S+N: Yeah... N: Do you still have your turtle? A: Yes I have it so at my home right at the time. S: How did you get the idea to buy a turtle? A: Uhm... *makes a funny sound again* Well it was when I moved from my, moved off from my mother... we used to have a lot of pets in my moms place. We had fishes and aquarium and cats and dogs and parrots and rabbit and you know, but then when I moved alone I was thinking about, because we always had so many pets in the home, that it would be nice to have some. Well then I realised that it’s, if I take a dog or cat it’s basic *smiles*, ok, it’s basic, it’s perus, and so many others have also, so I was thinking about what would be a little bit cooler to have, and also I had to realise that I’m not spending my time everytime at home, I have to travel and tour, so it had to be an animal, who, like, survived lots of days alone, and then I was thinking about maybe turtle was cool, would be cool. Uhm, I don’t know, maybe I was thinking also of spiders or snakes. But then I saw this magazin selling articel, that there was some guy from Kotka city was selling turtle and I was just *flips his fingers again* ok, I’m taking that. And that was basically it. And it’s, now it has been maybe 6 years or something. It’s growing up *smiles*. Slowly, but... You know, it’s so funny, I was just laughing with one of my friends, about this situation, because normally turtles live like 100 years, it’s, ok, it’s not waterturtles, it’s earthturtle, and now it’s like ten years old. And I’m tweny... what am I? *thinks* twentythree. So it lives maybe, uhm, 80 years still *laughs*, or something like that, so maybe I have to do a testament to somebody, because it... you know, maybe I’m gonna die before than my turtle. Perus... N: And do you talk to it, when you’re alone? Because some people talk to their pets... A: Ah... I don’t. S: Any secrets no friends of you know? Do you tell her, or it secrets? A: To my turtle? S: Yeah.. A: No! *laughs* N: Some people do... A: Ok.... N+S: The time is over. Thanks for the interview. A: Oh, already? Okay, you are welcome *smiles*
