Are there any misconceptions about yourself out there you can dispel? No. I think, especially now, with the Internet and all, there is so much misinformation flying about everywhere and you can't correct it all. The more the people talk about the band or myself, the better! It doesn’t really matter whether it is good or bad as long as people are interested.

TEARS ON TAPE: Ville Valo Discusses H.I.M’s Longevity, New Album and More! Posted on 22 April 2013. There’s a lot more to a record than simple notes, lyrics, and sounds. An impactful piece of music always remains wrapped in emotion. Love, hate, sadness, and joy resound at the greatest decibel imaginable. At the end of the day, a song’s feeling will carry on as long as the melody will and just as loudly. HIM holds that philosophy in the highest regard on its eighth full-length studio album “Tears On Tape” [Razor & Tie]. The platinum-selling Finnish quintet – Ville Valo (Vocals), “Linde” (Guitars), “Migé” (Bass), ”Burton” (Keyboards), and “Gas” (Drums)—finds rapture in divine rock’n’ roll hooks, eerie synths, and elegantly cinematic lyrics. You’ll undoubtedly feel each tear they shed. After touring heavily behind 2010’s “Screamworks: Love in Theory and Practice, Chapters 1-13” the band began taking its next step musically. However, it wasn’t as easy as these five musicians might’ve hoped it would be. Drummer “Gas”; had sustained a repetitive strained injury in his hand, and his doctors weren’t even sure if he would ever play drums again. It left the future of the legendary band in doubt. After waiting eight long months for him to return to action, the band found themselves ready to write the next chapter in the story of HIM. That next chapter sees Valo and Co. venture into a new territory once again, while upholding the pillars of their patented “Love Metal” of course. They cut the album in their native Finland at Helsinki’s Finnvox Studios, the site of some of their seminal work including their debut “Greatest Love Songs Vol. 666” and 2003’s “Love Metal” In addition, they tapped longtime collaborator Hiili Hiilesmaa for production and Tim Palmer [U2, Ozzy Osbourne, Pearl Jam, Rober Plant] for mixing. The record also boasts paintings from long-time friend BBC Radio’s Daniel P. Carter as cover art. Teaming up with Razor & Tie, they’re marching into their next phase of their career with the powerful tunes that comprise Tears On Tape — an album which will certainly please the band’s truly diehard global fan base that wears the “Heartagram” logo proud. Jason Price of Icon Vs. Icon recently sat down with HIM frontman Ville Valo to discuss his musical influences, the creation of “Tears On Tape” the longevity of the band and what the future may hold for them. It’s great to speak with you again, Ville. It has been a while since our last interview and we are excited to get the word out on the new album. Thanks for taking time out to talk with us today. It is a pleasure, a pleasure indeed but don’t thank me yet! [laughs] H.I.M. has been around for many years and developed an amazing fan following. I wanted to go back to the beginning and learn about how music originally came into your life. My daddy was a taxi driver when I was a kid. He would always take me to school and listen to old school blues a lot, so I grew up listening to Bo Diddley, Ry Cooder and whatnot. There was also old reggae, The Temptations and the Motown stuff as well. Those are really the first things that come to mind when I think of how music came into my life. Then, all of a sudden, I found rock’n’roll. It was the early ‘80s, it was the time of making mix tapes on cassettes. Then I bought my first album, which was “Animalize” by KISS on vinyl. I thought a lot of the band and that Gene Simmons was so incredibly cool that I started playing bass guitar. That is basically what I did when I was 8 or 9 years old. That was how I got into music. What was it about music that made you pursue it as a career instead of following a different path? I think it was a series of lucky accidents. When I was about 14, I started playing at pubs already as a bass player. It was around that age I just started to get a bit of money out of it. It was a way of living I just couldn’t change. I didn’t want to change it for the world. I loved it. I played in six or seven bands at the time. I was playing a lot, not getting payed proper or anything like that but I was still living with my parents, so it was fine. After I got finished with school, I guess I was 17 or 18, I was at the point where people start to think about what they will study or what they will become. I realized there was nothing I wanted to do besides music. My parents were really supportive and helped me out with my first rent, instruments, strings and stuff like that and made it way easy for me to actually concentrate on music instead of figuring what I am was doing for my next loaf of bread. With that said, did you have any idea when you picked up the instrument or even the mic for the first time it would lead you to a successful career? Well, definitely not. Obviously, there are always high hopes. I think if you want to start off playing in a rock band, you definitely do want to be the first band to play on the moon and so forth. You have to have high hopes. That is required. You have to be a bit of a daydreamer and think everything is possible. For me, it all happened little baby step by little baby step. It has taken us ages to get this far and the journey is still going on, so it is tough to say what would have happened, if certain things wouldn’t have happened. The only thing I know now is that there is so much luck involved in the whole business that it is definitely not about talent. Talent doesn’t hurt but it is not the main thing. Timing, luck and a few decent songs. You had your fair share of ups and downs along the way. To what do you attribute the longevity of the band? It is probably the fact we grew up together. I met our bass player when I was 8 or 9 years old and we bonded over bass playing. We were fans of Steve Harris from Iron Maiden and all of that stuff. I have known most of the guys in the band before we had H.I.M. Now, being 36, I have spent more than half of my life in this band and it is such an integral part of who I am as a person that it is not just about music, it is a brotherhood. I think that is the main reason we have been able to sustain and keep it together for such a long time. Your drummer, Mika “Gas Lipstick” Karppinen, suffered a repetitive stress injury at the end of 2011. From what I read, you said it caused you guys to reevaluate if you would carry on as a band. How close was the band to calling it a day and what made you push through and carry on? It was quite tough. We started working on the latest album “Tears On Tape” about two-and-a-half years ago. It was around that time his hand started acting up and we didn’t know what was going on. We realized we couldn’t rehearse and he went to see a gazillion, bazillion different doctors. They weren’t able to give us a proper prognosis. We had to wait a month at a time to see if there was any positive development there. After about six months or so, every one began to stress out and start freaking out about what would happen with the whole band and if we would be able to continue. Since we have the brotherhood type of vibe in this band, we just wanted to wait it out and be absolutely sure. If Gas wasn’;t able to play, we would then have had to figure out what to do next but we didn’t want to give up. I kept on working on songs and demo-ing them back home while he was healing. I think it was late May of last year that he said he was feeling good enough to come back to the rehearsal space and pound some skins proper. That is basically what we did and everything fell into place and was fine. He hasn’t had any trouble since, so triumph through tribulation, I guess. How did you arrive at the title “Tears On Tape” and what does it mean to you? I had that song written down for quite some time and it is an ode to our idols, like Black Sabbath and all those bands. It starts with the lyrics “Church bells toll and the thunder rolls around me”. That is basically just me describing the intro for Black Sabbath’s debut album. For me it is about the nostalgic feeling I get from listening to Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Cat Stevens, Neil Young and those people who shed their blood, sweat and tears on tape back in the day and created the wonderful masterpieces that inspired us to become part of the world of music. It was these icons that led the way and showed us that you don’t have to be a plumber, you can be a sonic plumber! [laughs] When you headed into the studio for “Tears On Tape” what were your expectations? Was there something you all had in mind you wanted to achieve? We more or less wanted to work with the Finnish producer Hiili Hiilesmaa at a studio called Finnvox where we have worked a gazillion times before. We also wanted to use Tim Palmer as the mix engineer. It was exactly the same team we used when we worked on “Love Metal” back in 2003 and on “Venus Doom” a few years later. With that team we pretty much knew what we were going to get but those two gentlemen really made it easy for us to really get deep into the heart of the process as opposed to having to introduce out macabre sense of humor and our musical perversions. It made the whole process fast, easy and painless. That is the reason we wanted to do it that way. We just wanted to have the album more lively, organic and noisy. We wanted it lively and analog in a way, even though it was digitally recorded and we didn’t want to over-polish it. That is what those two people do really well. They let the music live as opposed to crushing it to death. What can you tell us about your typical songwriting process? Are you doing anything differently these days as opposed to earlier albums? I think it is really close to how it was. I just find myself in the position of having something emotional to say but I can’t find the right words and then that is when I pick up a guitar. That is how it has always been. It is self expression or self therapy of sorts! I think it is nice that the process is not repetitive and is not the same old, same old every time around. It can start with a lyric, a melody or with the guitar. That is something that keeps us on our toes, I think. I get the basic core ideas down and then head to the rehearsal place where we flesh it up a bit. We turn the volume up to 11 and see how it flies! How many songs did you write for the album? Was there anything that didn’t make the cut we might hear in the future? I have always believed in fairly short albums. I think about 40 to 45 minutes is the perfect length for an album. I have never understood people who write 30 songs and then they pick 10 of them. I think I would rather spend my time working on the good songs! [laughs] It might sound a bit odd but I have always thought there is no reason to work on half-assed ideas. Obviously, at times there might be a riff that doesn’t work. The best thing to do is let that riff be for a while and come back to it at some point. A riff needs to be memorable. I don’t always believe in writing or recording riffs down because if you can’t remember the next day, then they are shit. I think that self-editing is one of the most important things I have learned along the way as opposed to having 15 hours of guitar riffs on a CD or cassette somewhere. Some people work like that and it’s fine. I think, at the end of the day, the only thing that matters is the result. I write a chorus and the ones that really speak for me and for the band are the ideas that live their own life and we let that be. That being said, we did try a couple of other songs as well that didn't quite work yet. I am sure that they will. There was one slow number that was really dirty and doomy. We thought that it would slow down the whole feel of the album too much so we will probably save it for later. Looking back on that entire process, what was the biggest challenge in bringing “Tears On Tape” to life? There were a gazillion different challenges, which is a good thing I think. If it feels easy, then it is wrong. It has to be this stressful and you have to have many a sleepless night. That is an important part of getting on along together so well. All of it was a painful joy, the whole process. It sounds like you guys are in a terrific place creatively. Is that a fair statement to make? Yeah, we are switching the gears up to start playing a few gigs in Europe and then a few in The States come May. Then there are festivals and so forth, followed by a proper worldwide tour in the fall. That is the interesting thing, creatively at least, because all the songs change and mutate into something different when you play live. Also, we can’t decide what songs people will gravitate towards. We have to wait it out until the album is out and see how the vibe is. That is interesting because now we have babied the songs in the studio and at the rehearsal place for such a long time and now they are coming out. It is interesting to see what happens with them and if people get them, hate them or something in between. You mentioned the upcoming tour, which I know we are really excited about as well. Do you approach touring differently today than in the past or is it still mayhem on the road!? [laughs] I think it is a different kind of mayhem. When we started out as a young band, the tours were really short. That enabled the opportunity of getting fucked up, messing about and all that. I think today we are a bit more responsible but not too responsible. I think there has to be a level when it comes to that thing and it should be balanced. Looking back at yourself as an artist, how have you evolved through the years and what have you learned about yourself along the way? I have learned I am a fairly impatient bastard and that hasn’t changed! [laughs] That being said, I think the biggest change has been that I am a bit more patient than I used to be. People are different and you have to respect everyone’s head space. Some people are quick learners and some aren’t but that doesn’t mean they aren’t good at what they do. The whole band, all five guys, are very different characters. I think that is the strength of the band. For example, our keyboard player is a classically trained guy who loves to play chess, so he has a more mathematical mind. Our bass player is more of a psychedelia guy, who goes with the flow and it is all based on feel. There are all sorts of different aspects and angles in the band and it makes the whole creative process much more interesting. If you could go back in time to where you were just starting out, what is the best piece of advice you would pass along to yourself? Probably, brush your teeth or something! [laughs] I think there is little room for regret. It is important to make your mistakes but that doesn’t mean you have to make mistakes on purpose. I am pretty happy with everything I have gone through and everything the band has gone through over the years. We have done good stuff and we have done bad stuff and everything in between and that is important, otherwise, we wouldn’t be here. It can’t all be wine, dance and roses or wine, women and song. I think that would be boring. It is good to have those moral hangovers on occasion! You mentioned the brotherhood you and your bandmates formed. Do you feel you would overstep your bounds by venturing outside with a solo project at some point? Is that something you are even interested in at this point? Back in the day, I was figuring it would be nice to do something really left of center, psychedelic and folky but, at the end of day, I think most of what I call my musical perversions I can do with the band as it is. I am really happy about that and it is fairly rare. There is really no reason to fuck it all up. Are there any misconceptions about yourself out there you can dispel? No. I think, especially now, with the Internet and all, there is so much misinformation flying about everywhere and you can’t correct it all. The more the people talk about the band or myself, the better! It doesn’t really matter whether it is good or bad as long as people are interested. I have been a fan of H.I.M. for many years and I have to say that “Tears On Tape”; is one of your best outings. Is there anything you would like to say to your fans around the world before I let you go? Obviously, we have to extend our gratitude for all their patience. I think the interesting things are going to start when the album is out. Just hold your breathe for a couple of weeks longer and peep the album to see how you like it. Then we can have another discussion about the details! Thanks for your time today, Ville. We will spread the word on the album and look forward to seeing you soon! Cool! Thank you so much! Take care!
Endlich ist es soweit. Am 26. April 2013 erscheint HIM's achtes Studioalbum mit dem Titel "Tears On Tape" in Finnland.
Oktaven. Besonders beeindruckend ist die Nummer "W.L.S.T.D" ("When Love Starts To Die").
Schon beim Helldone Festival 2012 stellten HIM erstmals ihren neuen Song "I Will Be The End Of You" der Fangemeinde vor.
"Tears On Tape" kommt beim ersten Mal eher ruhig rüber.
HIM on Tour in Deutschland: 22.04.2013 Postbahnhof, Berlin 24.04.2013 Gloria-Theater, Köln 10.-11.08.2013 Mera Luna Festival, Hildesheim
HIM: “Wir verbinden Arbeit und Freundschaft miteinander”
Prominent24.de: Am Freitag erscheint euer neues Album “Tears on Tape”.
Ich habe also keine Alternative, keinen “Plan B”.

HIM вернулись с новым альбомом “Tears on Tape”. Также мне нравится “Into the Night”, а еще песня-название альбома “Tears on Tape”.
Finnish rockers HIM payed London an intimate visit tonight, in support of the release of their new album, Tears On Tape. New tracks such as ‘Tears On Tape’ and ‘Into The Night’ intersperse what largely consists of a greatest hits set, including fan favourites such as the ‘love metal’ of ‘Buried Alive By Love’ and ‘Funeral of Hearts’, to their brilliant re-imagining of Chris Isaak’s ‘Wicked Game’. Whilst there wasn’t any surprises in their setlist, a devoted fan base – ‘heartagrams’ and HIM merch adorn the vast majority of the crowd tonight – and the pop-yet-heavy-songs themselves, mean that the set still remains enjoyable; of course it helps when front-man Ville Valo (below) is still one of he most iconic contemporary characters in rock music today.
Ihnen fehlt etwas Wesentliches.
Was hat in Ihrem Leben absolute Priorität?
Meine Musik, meine Freundin.
The singer Ville Valo talks about his passion for chess and family planning.
Printby email Dark clothes, long tousled hair, dreamy view, for example sitting Ville Valo, 36, in a Berlin hotel on the windowsill. Although the Finn makes pretty grim metal music with his band HIM, he's amazing sense of humor. He has no problem with themselves to take the mickey. Only when the singer talks about the songs from his new CD "Tears on Tape," he is serious. One feels that it is his music very much at heart.
Is it true that you are a passionate chess player?
Let me put it this way: now and I quite like games, but with the talent of Garry Kasparov unfortunately I'm not blessed.
However, you belong to the chess club chaos Mannheim. How did it happen?
An old friend of mine runs this club, so I'm an honorary member. Honestly, the HIM keyboard player and our bass player Jani Purttinen Miiko Paananen but bring much more into this club. The two are pretty good chess player.
Then you can unsubscribe yes some games during your tours.
You know what we did a few years ago? We invited in every city in which we had a gig, the champion of the local chess club to us. We then competed against him before the concerts.
That does not sound like the typical sex-drugs-and-rock'n'roll excesses.
The person Ville Hermanni Valo was born on 22 Born November 1976 in Helsinki, Finland. Even as a child he played various instruments. In 1995, the singer together with school friends, the band His Infernal Majesty, named HIM. The debut album "Greatest Love Songs Vol 666" was released in 1997. Two years later the band with the number-one hit "Join me (in death)" and the album "Razorblade Romance" international breakthrough.
Alongside Valo also working again with other bands such as The Bloodhound Gang, Cradle of Filth, The 69 Eyes or The Mission. With actress Natalia Avelon he took in 2007 for the movie "The Wild Life" the song "Summer Wine" on which was several weeks at number two in the charts in Germany.
The new HIM album "Tears on Tape" was released on Friday.
Well, other bands to book strippers, but we are fascinated by the chessboard. No, seriously: At the beginning of our career, we have it pop right, then we really could not find a party of. But this is now no longer. Finally, joins us at a show to the next, but we have to be fit.
Does that mean that you are living extremely healthy?
Well, I have a few vices. Although I had given up smoking for two and a half years, but let me stress the tour taking up smoking again. Even with the alcohol abstinence - four and a half years I have not touched a drop - not flipped it over time. At times I am completely dry, then I drink again. And then there is not only a glass of wine. We Finns are simply no enjoyment drinkers, the noise excites us.
Do you want to replace your gloomy thoughts with the alcohol?
Scandinavians put us in a certain melancholy.
Also HIM songs usually carry melancholy in it. In "All Lips go blue" for example, you speak about death.
For me, this song is a memento mori, which is a reminder that everything is impermanent. Everyone dies sometime, we can not be afraid to run away. And because this is inevitable, I do not believe in constantly thinking about. We had better make the most of every moment.
If you can do this forever?
Phew, no. Sometimes I get to a point where nothing seems to have a value. Some would then probably attest to my depression. I myself do not see it quite so extreme. I think we all go through occasional moments in which we are like exhausted.
How do you deal with it?
I'll wait and stand by that. In this situation only one thing: patience.
You could also ask others for help.
This is not me. I am a lone wolf who likes to be alone.
Amazing. For your piece "WLSTD" gives the impression that you are totally dependent on love and relationships.
So I have not even meant. I think people who have no passion for anything - be it for a partner, the job or a hobby - go through life like zombies. You are missing something essential.
What has absolute priority in your life?
My music, my friend. However, it is often difficult to find the balance between the two.
You are now in my mid 30 Think about children?
I've done enough damage already. Oh, that was just fun. A family does not have to be great plan, I think the appropriate time for young eventually comes all by itself, but even if I was to be a father: I do not necessarily married. My freedom is very important to me. In a marriage, I would feel just like me down in chains.
Because your sex symbol image could be damaged?
It's really flattering to be considered attractive, clear. But also I do not define myself alone. I want to be recognized primarily as a musician.
Shauna O'Donnell recently had a chat with HIM frontman Ville Valo regarding the band's upcoming tour and album.
Thanks for talking with me today.
Ville: A pleasure indeed.
On April 30th you will release your eighth album titled Tears on Tape via Razor & Tie Records. Congratulations!!
Ville: Well, thank you.
With this being your eighth record, I would assume you have experimented a lot over the years. I read that you decided to go back to your roots with this new record and write songs that resembled the earlier records. Why did you feel that now was the time to do that?
Ville: Maybe it was because we ran out of ideas. (Laughs) We are huge fans of Black Sabbath, Type O Negative and all of those kinds of bands that made us want to do what we do. I think that is what going back to the roots might have meant, as opposed to us listening to our previous albums.
You heard that Black Sabbath is putting out a new record right?
Ville: Yes, it is called 13. It will be great for us because we will have more stuff to steal from. (Laughs) I haven’t heard a single thing about it yet. It’s a funny thing, our guitar player Linde has been hanging out with Tony Iommi for a long time, so Sabbath is in the family so to speak. I’m a big fan and that band is one of the biggest influences of what we do. It should be for anyone who wants to pick up a guitar and play.
It was recorded in your home country with long-time producer Hiili Hiilesmaa and mixed by long time-band associate, Tim Palmer. What was it about these two that made you feel they were the right guys for the job?
Ville: They were cheap. We have used that popular dynamic duo in the past and Hiili has produced our band from the very beginning. He did the first demos back in the 90’s and he is an important character when it comes to creating the sound of HIM. It is the sound of Hiili and HIM, so he is an important guy and he is a good friend. He is great with guitars and that 70’s sort of vibe, so we knew with this material and the stuff that we had been working on that he would be a perfect match. On top of that, we met Tim Palmer in 2003 or 2002. He mixed an album called Love Metal. That popular record was produced by Hiili and mixed by him, so it was that same sort of combo. They are both these laboratory rats in a way that they are not afraid to experiment and try stuff that a lot of people wouldn’t really do. They are definitely a big part of the family.
Did Hiili co-write songs on the record?
Ville: No, he is like a sonic architect. It’s like I do the paintings and he is great at framing them. One of the reasons we went back to record in Helsinki was that we saved on shipping costs because we utilized a lot of our own gear. It is more exciting for us sonically. The album before called Screamworks was recorded in Los Angeles and it meant that we had to rent, ship and sort everything out. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but this time around it felt more “homey” in a good way. We were in a studio that we know really well and we didn’t have to figure out what was happening because we knew that place so well that it felt like playing in our own backyard. I think the cool thing about recording this record is when a rock band goes into the studio, you do your pre-production and then you record what they call scratch tracks. So you record the songs and then you start overdubbing them. Then the drummer goes in and plays the actual part. This time we wanted to have everything available at all times, so that in one day we were able to do a bit of vocals, a bit of keyboards, a bit of drums and this and that. There was an experimental nature going on. It enabled us to be like kids in a candy store more or less. It was interesting at least for me.
Do you have a big guitar collection?
Ville: No, I only have three guitars, but they are super big. (Laughs) It's just bits and bobs that I have collected over the years. I’m not a collector per say. It’s just like esoteric equipment from the years gone by. Let’s just say that if someone were to break into my house, they wouldn't make a big buck off of it. It’s more like stuff that has been haunting me personally and stuff that helped me create the vision for the band so to speak.
I always wonder if artists keep the first guitar they ever had.
Ville: I do have my first bass guitar, because I started with bass when I was a kid. My parents bought me a Gibson SG copy from some Taiwanese company back in the early or mid 80’s. I’m that sort of fellow where I keep everything until my girlfriend says "You really need to get rid of that." You know how girls are.
Yep, I happen to be one.
Ville: For me it goes either or, I like neat, but then again when it comes to music I like chaos. It is stuff that is important to me because it is a big part of the history of the band. Over the years it keeps on piling up.
When it comes to writing do you usually write the lyrics first or the music?
Ville: Usually it is the music. I’ve always considered music to be when you feel a certain thing, but cannot put it into words. I’ll pick up an acoustic guitar and start humming. The tough part is trying to find the lyrical equivalent.
Your drummer was having some issues with his wrists. How is he doing?
Ville: Well wrist wise he is fine. Everyone was super scared because it took a long time for him to heal up. It was a combination of repetitive strain injury and a tennis elbow type of thing. At the same time the doctor found out that he had some nerve damage in his palms and up his arms as well. A lot of shit hit the fan at the same time. It was obviously stressful for him because he has been playing music about forty years and he has never had any physical trouble before. It was a bad time for him and at the same time for the band because we didn’t know what was going to happen next. We didn’t know if we were going to be the same band or what was going to happen next. As you know the show must go on. I’m really glad that we did wait it out. I think because of all the philosophical dilemmas that we went through, we came back stronger. Everybody felt that we rejuvenated when it came to performing music. When we went back to the rehearsal space our drummer was back to normal so to speak. It was such a relief for everybody that I truly believe you can hear it in the music as well.
I'm glad he is doing better. I know a lot of drummers who have shoulder problems.
Ville: Yeah and a lot of back problems as well because of their posture. Rock n rollers tend to slouch. Nobody is a yogi at least when it comes to rock n roll. I think that a lot of stuff behind the sound of incredibly talented players is the fact that they do stuff wrong.
The album's artwork, created by Daniel P. Carter is so creative. You can tell that a lot of thought went into creating it.
Ville: Well we have to blame Daniel for it. I love everything pseudo occult, I love symbolism and visuals that make your mind run free or let your imagination run wild. Let’s say if there were to be a message, it is not handed to you on a silver platter. You have to work your way through it and figure it out. At the same time it is free for interpretation as opposed to there being one explanation for it all. That is how I like visual art. I was hoping for the best. I told him to go with the flow and we will see what he comes up with because he wasn’t our slave. It was more about us being friends and him creating beautiful artwork. I’m super happy because it is organic. You should see the original pieces that I have back home.
I love to see bands put a lot of effort into the things that they do.
Ville: When they started releasing commercial MP3’s the first thing the record label started doing was they started cutting down the amount of pages in booklets. I was telling everybody “Isn’t that the exact opposite of what you should be doing?” If you consider that the actual physical album is sort of dying out then that is exactly the time that you should spend a lot of time working on making something that actually feels like something. These days it is nice to give the few people who actually walk into the record store something to hold in their hands.
Exactly, there are bands that still put out vinyl records and people are buying them even if they do not have a record player. It is a piece of art.
Ville: I do enjoy the fact that nowadays you have the download coupons with the vinyl. That’s great, but the absolute fact is that vinyl sounds better than MP3’s. It just does. I really dig vinyl. I’m really into getting a reel to reel player for myself. I’ve never had one, so I was thinking of that. You have to put some effort into it because you have to turn the sides and actually do something as opposed to clicking a virtual button on your Iphone. That’s what is good about digital media as well, the fact that you can carry 12,000 songs with you wherever you go. It is amazing.
I was talking to someone the other day about 8 tracks. The kids today don’t even know what that is.
Ville: Well they don’t. I think 8 tracks were huge in America, but I don’t think it was ever super big in Europe. My dad used to have an 8 track in his old American car. I think he had a checker, like an old New York taxi cab. I still have some Emmylou Harris on 8 track, but I don’t have the player anymore.
There are some show dates listed and most are sold out. Will you be adding more dates? Will a nationwide U.S. tour be booked?
Ville: This short trek within the next few weeks is just going to be more about us saying Hi to the people who have been loyal and who know what our band is doing. It is a way for us to let people know that there is an album coming out. That is the kind of idea, so we are not adding dates to that. I think it is amazing that all the gigs sold out. It is pretty amazing for a band to come from such a far away country to still be interesting enough for the locals. We will do some festivals in Europe and then in early autumn we will start touring proper. I’m still waiting to see how it is going to pan out as far as where we are going to start. Are we going to start in Europe or will we start from the States? We don’t know what is going to happen, but the good thing is that we will be touring.
Thanks so much for the interview.
Ville: Thank you! Hope to see you in Los Angeles.

Захотелось понять ревью на немецком, надо же правда, хватило лишь на то, чтобы набрать в гугле последнюю фразу« Einer bleibt jedoch festzuhalten: Im Olymp der Melodie gehoren HIM auch mit Tears On Tape weiter zu den absolute giganten».

Decadent Finnish rocker Ville Valo has never gone in for self-analysis. Always moving so fast with his Goth-metal outfit HIM, he barely has noticed the nearly two decades flying by since its formation.
But for the band’s melodic new CD “Tears on Tape,” he was forced to stop and take serious stock, because a nerve-damaging hand injury sidelined his drummer Gas, and the group, for more than eight months.
“We weren’t sure if we were going to make another album, or if the band itself would even continue to exist,” he says. “So it made everybody sit back and reflect on how much the band means to each individual — it was a real existential crisis.”
Gas (Mika Karppinen) recovered. HIM hits The City tonight, debuting suitably Wagnerian new numbers like “Drawn & Quartered,” “All Lips go Blue” and the title track, a reference to the powerful emotions that Valo’s favorite artists — from Black Sabbath to Elvis Presley and Roy Orbison — historically captured in the studio.
“It’s a hats-off to our idols and the musical milestones that made me want to do what I do, made the band do what they do, and kind of got us all together,” he says. “So this was the first time I was actually able to reflect on what the hell just happened in these past 18, 19 years.”
Valo hadn’t been drinking in ages. He started again while his drummer consulted specialist after specialist; in vino veritas, he believed.
Finally looking back on his catalog — from 1997’s “Greatest Love Songs Vol. 666” to the 2003 breakthrough “Love Metal,” emblazoned with the singer’s signature “heartagram” (a heart-shaped pentagram logo that launched an entire line of popular merchandise) — he was proud of 90 percent of it.
“It’s impossible not to make mistakes,” he says. “But making mistakes is very necessary for one to get to know himself better and grow up as a human being.”
The singer had help sorting through his deep thoughts. “I’ve been sharing my home with a female for the past year or so, and that’s a lovely change — there are other things to do as well as just ruminate and be utterly depressed,” he says.
He adds, laughing, “Well, ‘girlfriend’ just sounds so tacky. But a lot of positive stuff happened in my personal life that helped me get through all the stress with the band.”
Valo has concluded that HIM has been of paramount importance. “It’s what I’ve been doing all my life,” he says. “So I’m really happy that we were actually able to pull ourselves together and create an album like this. Girlfriends or not.”
Хиты HIM сегодня ночью дебютировали в The City (радио?) “Drawn & Quartered”, “All Lips go Blue” и заглавный трек (ТОТ?) (Girlfriends or not)»

Formed in 1992 by vocalist Ville Valo, guitarist Mikko “Linde” Lindström, and bassist Mikko “Migé” Paananen, HIM’s albums have seen them win a worldwide following, becoming the first Finnish act to achieve platinum sales in the U.S. To date, HIM has sold a combined 1.75 million albums and over 1 million digital tracks in North America.
Ever since they released their super hit ‘Join Me (In Death)’, almost every single or album placed itself in the upper ranks of international hit lists. Alone in Germany, two of HIM’s albums have reached the pole position of the charts and other ones followed, having reached the second, third and fourth position there. HIM released their new album 'Tears On Tape' in Germany via Universal Music on 26th April 2013 and vial Razor & Tie Records in North America on 30th April 2013. The new album is the “Love Metal” band’s eighth official album and was recorded in their home country with long-time producer Hiili Hiilesmaa and mixed by long time-band associate, Tim Palmer (U2, Ozzy Osbourne, Pearl Jam, Robert Plant). In order to support the new record, HIM made their way to Berlin’s Postbahnhof on 22nd April. http://www.heartagram.com / https://www.facebook.com/theheartagram
Music & Performance Maybe it’s just an impression but in the run-up to the release of their 8th full-length studio release there was a lot more promotion going on than for the last two records, especially with such mighty tools like Facebook and its increasing fan base as a vehicle. HIM promised to return to old strengths under a new label, teaming up once again with producer Tim Palmer after the horrendously tame “Screamworks” engineered by Matt Squire. Hence maybe it’s just me getting more and more excited for the new record and - of course - the show after it was announced as one of only two gigs across Germany in this context. For a remarkable time it was vague if the band would ever be able to return to stage in its known line-up since drummer Mika/Gas suffered for the good of a whole year under severe nerve damage in his arms which kept him from playing. Nevertheless, eventually he recovered and the band went on rehearsing, coming up with the songs for the record which now has been named ‘Tears on Tape’. Over three years have passed since the band’s last visit to good old Germany and with the new material ready it was time to come back. My first and last live encounter with His Infernal Majesty was in 2000 while they were touring with ‘Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights’. Back then they obliviously and admittedly lacked motivation and didn’t hide that since they were run into the ground by extensive tour schedules. 13 years later I was ready to give them a second chance.
Although the days of HIM’s mainstream appeal and single chart entries have passed, the word spread around and the tickets were sold out over a month prior to the event. The broad interest in the Finnish Goth rockers further showed in the length of the queue of fans which appeared a considerable time before the doors opened. While some latecomers vainly tried to obtain some “left-over” tickets on site, those who had them wondered what the term “HIM + Guest” meant in terms of supporting acts. Eventually the doors were opened, the admittance went on smoothly and screens informed us that the mentioned guest went by the DJ Lord Noir and provided the acoustic framework till the show would start. Although that point of time was scheduled for 8 o’clock, some time passed, bridged with adequate tunes from German and international Goth favourites on a danceable sound level. In the meantime busy staff completed all the stuff that could have been done beforehand (since there were no other bands to play that day): uncovering the amps, distributing the setlists, tuning the guitars. During that time the well-heeled fan was able to buy exactly one shirt for his/her specific gender, printed in one colour, carrying the dates of both Germany gigs plus the UK one for the bargain-price of 25 Euro. A few minutes to nine the lights went out and the show began with the album intro ‘Unleash the red’ followed by the opener ‘All lips go blue’ and a torrent of ecstatic girly screams as the band and front man - and wet dream of many of the audience’s ladies – Ville Valo stepped onto the stage, dressed in a tank top with scarf and a heavy cross necklace. I probably will never understand why he likes hiding his hair under beanies as he did this night; I get his appeal even at the age of 37. Bassist Migé once again gave the impression of Robinson Crusoe’s well-nourished brother, while Linde kept his dreads neatly bound together - but externals are not what we came for.
The first thing that sprung to ear was the extremely heavy sound with a massive and broad guitar and the bass forcefully thickening the sensation. There is no doubt that HIM are professionals in creating the mix they want to transmit; therefore drummer Mika used an acrylic shield to achieve the best on stage and PA mix. If you liked HIM the heavier the better that show was definitely for you. Burton’s keyboards integrated well into the mix and the drums came across rocking and adequately tight. Only the microphone sound lacked a little bit of brilliance, drowning from time to time between the other instruments, but maybe that’s been a locational issue. When it comes to performance, the delivering was as good as the sound and left me with no complaints. There were a noticeable amount of songs in which Ville himself felt like laying hand on his semi-acoustic guitar. That made the sound broader and gave it a certain lightness from which the restrained verses profited, even in songs like the classic “Wicked Game” which never to rarely was performed in that version before. His performance did the songs justice (in which I had no doubt since they were written acoustically by him in the first place), but also by his vocal delivery. Ville was in good shape and gave a masterful performance of his range on his bittersweet vocal lines, only misplacing a scream here and there.
So did the fans, who – for the internet’s sake and to the surprise of the front man – were very perfect singing along even the lyrics of the album, which only should be released two days after the concert. Ville should have taken lessons by his followers, because a verse slipped him by during the performance of ‘Kiss of Dawn’ (although he managed to remember his rendition of the line “…and I look into your eyes” which he intonated “…and I look between your thighs”). This and every other mishap were precisely captured by vaguely a million mobile phones and pocket cameras buzzing half a meter above the audience at all times, so that every lit cigarette and each beanie-adjusting could be documented on YouTube. Considering the huge back catalogue of singles and fan favourites, most of their followers should have left the Postbahnhof satisfied that night. After the above-mentioned opener, HIM closed in for a rush through their 19 year on-going history, covering nearly every album of their career. Noticeably songs from ‘Venus Doom’ and ‘Greatest Love Songs Vol. 666’ took a great amount of slots on the setlist and went perfectly with the band’s live sound, while the previous album ‘Screamworks’ was not even touched once – no ‘Heartkiller’, no ‘Dying Song’ for Berlin – but there was no reason to weep (or was it?): They brought along hits like ‘Join Me in Death’, ‘Right Here in My Arms’ or ‘The Funeral of Hearts’ to the content of their fans. The latter one was played in a nice rendition with an extra jazzy intro part. Although it’s been a CD release concert, HIM made a wise decision only to play four of the new songs during their 1 hour and 10 minutes on stage, before they left to come back for the encore ‘Sleepwalking past hope’, which for me couldn’t have been a better song to finish with.
All things considered, HIM played a very enjoyable concert with only a few surprises but a great selection of tracks. It could be the chilly Finish mentality but besides the dynamic music there not that much was going on: The communication was sparse (but existent) and the stage performance itself followed suit. However I got the feeling that HIM did enjoy being back on a German stage and I am glad they were. Unfortunately the last few days again brought some more bad news: The band had to cancel their U.S. tour on the basis of a diagnosis of severe asthma with presumptive pneumonia on the part of Ville Valo. We wish him all the best to recover soon to play many more Germany gigs in the future.

MY FAVOURITE TATTOOS IS... "The eyes of Edgar Allan Poe on my back! I don't get to see it often, but I like it. It's not just about Poe - it's about (2003 album) The Eyes Of Alice Cooper and Turbonegro who also stole that image. It's a good combination of early shock rock, punk and literature - some of the things I love most in life."
THE BEST THING ON MY MANTELPIECE IS... "Probably a Oiuja board from the 1920s! That was before Adolf Hitler's rise, and it has both a Star of David and a swastika on it - the swastika was a mystical symbol long before the Nazis appropriated it. It's not necessarily the best piece you'll ever see, but it is pretty interesting."
THE BOOK I COULDN'T DO WITHOUT IS... "A Word In Your Shell-Like by Nigel Rees! I love to read all sorts of different things and that's a quirky one. I'm very interested in language and words, and this is 6,000 curious and everyday phrases explained. I'd rather choose that or the Bible! I couldn't do without books in general."
MY FAVOURITE PIECE OF JEWELLERY IS... "An old crucifix that came from my grandmother who passed away ages ago. I've been wearing it religiously, if you'll excuse the pun, since I found it a couple of months ago. I wouldn't let go of it easily."
THE ALBUM I'D TAKE ON A DESERT ISLAND IS... "Witchcult Today by Electric Wizard (2007)! They're a great doom band from England and they're influenced by a lot of the same bands I was influenced by. I have a really cool solver covered vinyl version of it with a gatefold. It's a double album, it looks great, and it's one of the best albums of the past 20 years or so at least. I'd have to have some way to plug a record player in, of course. Otherwise I'd just have to hum!"
THE LAST FILM I SAW AT THE CINEMA WAS "Terminator 3 (Raise Of The Machines, 2003). That shows how long ago it was! I hate going to the cinema because you can't smoke, but the atmosphere always makes me cough and then I get embarrassed because I'm the annoying coughing guy. I think I lasted about 40 minutes, needed to go to the loo and then I couldn't get back in!"
THE MOST EXPENSIVE THING I OWN IS... "My house" But if you're talking about the contents inside the house, then I do have some pretty cool musical equipment, I have some vintage analogue synths that are getting more expensive by the day, and the microphone I got to sing through on the new album was pretty expensive too. That was about five grand or so, so I'd say maybe that!"
MY FAVOURITE TV SHOW IS... "Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, which was out on Channel 4 quite a few years ago now. It was funny and stupid, and it's a hats-off to all the horror movies I used to watch when I was a kid. It's one of those rare shows I'm able to watch repeatedly without getting bored. It's got great non acting and it's one of my favourites alongside The Mighty Boosh."

Наверно все-таки Teras on Tape и Into the Night от Стефана, а All Lips Go Blue от Евгения... All Lips Go Blue

Kulkurin Taival (2008)
Моя любимая песня в школе была – W.A.S.P.(*3) L.O.V.E.
По правде, у меня было трудновато с английским, когда я был ребенком, и там, где он пел «L-O-V-E, all I need's my love machine» (Л-Ю-Б-О-ВЬ, все что мне нужно – моя машина любви) я долгое время слышал это как «Hello, Miss Piggy. Yeah…» Найди это: W.A.S.P. (1984)
Iron Maiden (1980)
King Night (2010)
Funeral In Carpathia (Скрытый текст
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sX6-Yo1tt7A
Dusk… And Her Embrace (1996)
Untouchable.
Weather Systems (2012)
Venus Doom (2007)
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (1973)

HIM frontman Ville Valo remembers the day he fell in love with music festivals.
It was back in 1996 when his younger self headed to Denmark with some friends to watch a bill with the likes of Sex Pistols, Neil Young, Life of Agony and Slayer – which Valo passed out listening to.
“I love festivals,” he told TeamRock DJ Moose at the Download Festival.
“I remember my first and only one as a fan was in Denmark and I passed out watching Slayer drunk and stoned out of my mind.”
Nowadays Valo plays festival with HIM instead of attending as a fan but he still loves the festival vibe and getting to catch up with friends, new and old.

It’s been a rocky year so far for melancholic Finnish metallers HIM – after the release of their excellent new album Tears On Tape, the band were forced to cancel their spring US tour after frontman Ville Valo unexpectedly got sick with severe asthma and pneumonia. Thankfully, as their performance today on the Pepsi Max stage proves, he appears to have made a full recovery. The band’s signature lovelorn doom fits perfectly into the dark, intimate setting of the tent, which is packed with HIM fans eager to scream out their favourite lyrics and catch a glimpse of the waifish singer.
Opening with live favourite Buried Alive By Love, the band appear to have had a breath of life as they are more energetic than ever. As always, guitarist Linde Lindstrom makes his future daddy-in-law Mr Iommi proud with those stonking great riffs, while Gas Lipstick’s drumming lends a huge, anthemic feel to the new album’s title track. Of course, it helps that Ville’s unique voice doesn’t appear to have suffered at all despite his illness; in fact, it sounds better than ever as he plunges the depths of the baritone register in The Kiss of Dawn, croons his way seductively through Chris Isaak’s Wicked Game and hits some impressively high-pitched screams, often improvising at the end of each song to show off his vocal acrobatics.
Not only is his voice sounding better than ever, but he’s also relaxed, grinning like the Joker and shaking his skinny hips, making it hard to look away from him. The band are unmistakably a tight-knit family, and today it shows more than ever.
Long Distance of the Long...* The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner c альбома Somewhere in Time. The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner c альбома Somewhere in Time 1986-ого года.

-Rolling, Rolling, Rolling... -Rolling, Rolling, Rolling?

K! speaks to the likes of *deep breath* Andy Biersack, Asking Alexandria's Danny Worsnop, HIM's Ville Valo, Biffy Clyro's Simon Neil, Slipknot's Joey Jordison, Limp Bizkit's Wes Borland, The Blackout's Snoz, Airbourne's Joel O'Keeffe, Brann Dailor of Mastodon, Cronos of Venom, Jason Newsted and King Diamond about the most insane things they've ever done! Trying to outrun a cheetah? Playing to over a million people? Dying for six minutes? Stories so crazy that you couldn't make 'em up.
а что "didn't save his soul" - это да...
If you aren't aware of His Infernal Majesty, better known as HIM, you must be living under a rock. Ville Valo, charming, cool and unlike anyone else, has been the front man for this Finnish band for nearly two decades. After some challenges and a few delays, their eighth, rather tasty album “Tears On Tape” came out in April.
In August HIM starts touring the U.S and then throughout Europe. The millions of fans worldwide who will be attending these concerts will be treated with some new songs that have rarely been played before. Lead singer Ville Valo speaks to Red Room…
So, you have 8 albums under your belt. How does that feel? It must have been such an amazing long journey.
It’s just one of those things that you don’t realise until it’s over. It’s been pretty fast paced and there are always new adventures ahead. Obviously everybody in the band is proud of what we have achieved, but the more you eat the hungrier you get. You always want to come across new adventures, and meet new people, and write new songs. It’s very important not to stay still.
Looking back, why did you decide to write songs in English?
It just felt more natural – we grew up listening to Jane’s Addiction, Bad Brains, Soundgarden, Black Sabbath. All of our favorite albums were in English, so we wanted to be a part of that same dream.
How do you make music? Do you write music or lyrics first?
I have moleskins filled with one liners but I rarely use them. Melody is way easier for me than lyrics, so usually I pick up a guitar and start strumming and humming. At some point, when stuff sounds like a proper song, I take the idea to the rest of the guys. We all see where it leads and what’s going to be the next step, whether it is usable or whether it is going to be crap.
Do you have to be in a bad or good mood to write music?
I have to be in a situation where I’m asking questions.
When you write a song, do you imagine it visually?
I think it’s a combination, a mood can be explained in color. It’s like when you say you’re feeling blue. I think I make music because it’s somehow intangible and yet becomes tangible when you get the song done. When you get your emotions out through guitar, or whatever instrument it might be, all of a sudden you feel relieved.
Your band has been around for more than 20 years. How do you all get along after such a long time?
By staying away from each other [laughs]. At some point, no matter how much you care about the other people, you see 4 other people all the time and have no privacy whatsoever. It does become exhausting, but at the same time it is something that we have been doing for such a long period of time, that we’re still proud of that.
Have you ever had any arguments about writing music or recording?
Well, I have to fight with myself, but I’m allowed to do it, because I write music for HIM [laughs]. So, it’s more or less internal. But yeah, let’s say we do have arguments and we do have moments of constructive criticism, but I think that getting riffs heals our wounds. That’s the only thing you need. There are moments of uncertainty as to whether it is going in the right direction, whether it could be better or whether it is somewhere in between. Usually the best way is to crack open a beer and turn the volume up. You can talk about details when you get inside the studio.
Would you say that HIM has its own, unique sound?
I do think we have an identity of our own, but I wouldn’t say that we re-invented the wheel, we are a part of a big wheel. We’re just disciples, not inventors. although hopefully, when push comes to shove, we have enough originality to stand on our own legs.
In your opinion, is your new album more positive?
It’s unforced and has a lot of gloom and doom to it, but it’s not as angsty. We wanted to keep it melancholy and dark, but at the same time pretty and not something that you would be scared of.
Which song took the longest to record?
I think that they were all about the same. There are always some kinks, but I don’t think that we had any super humungous problems with anything. It wasn’t smooth sailing, but it was close to smooth.
What is your faviroute song from the album, both lyrically and musically?
Well, the album was released really late last year, so we haven’t actually had the time to really see the forest for the trees yet. It always takes a bit of time, so when we start working on the next album, we’ll go back and listen to the stuff and realise what we like and what we don’t like about “Tears On Tape.” We’ve already played a few songs live, and for me, an important track is the title one - Tears On Tape, because I feel that it’s one of those songs that you can play with an acoustic guitar and it sounds great. You don’t need a lot of orchestration behind it, it sounds authentic and massive and pretty and it’s kind of what I like about music.
Finally, I'd like to ask about your upcoming tour. You hit America at the end of this summer, are you looking forward to it?
Of course, it will be great, because we will be touring with fellow Scandinavians, Volbeat, so it will be fun, I like them. I think it’ll be a good match, as they also have a unique sound. We are going play about 30 gigs in the States before coming back over for the full blown European tour.
Gas Lipstick, aka Mika Kristian Karppinen the drummer for multi-platinum Finnish band HIM, took the time to tell Drumhead what his new favorite drum gear is:
“That's a tough one since I've just changed everything apart from my drumsticks for our latest recording. But I have to say that I'm totally in love with my new drum kit. I just joined the Ludwig drum family and they sent me a Legacy Classic kit and it Rocks, Big Time!”
HIM’s 2013 album Tears On Tape debuted at #15 on Billboard’s Top 200 in May. The band will tour the US and parts of Canada as part of Monster Energy’s Rock Allegiance Tour, which also features Volbeat, All That Remains and Airborne. Starting August 23 in St. Paul Minnesota, the tour wraps up on Sept. 28 in NYC.

There are many today that have sung of love and loss, but none compare to the kings of heartbreak themselves, HIM.
Their stage presence is very much different to the last performers, while Spreng controlled his audience, Ville Valo is a much more vulnerable front man as he clutches tightly to his mic, giving the performance an intimate and emotional feel.
‘It’s good to be back,’ says the lead singer, after the band’s first song. It’s clear that they have been missed. The love metal stars thrill their audience with new tunes as well as old classics such as ‘Wings of a Butterfly’, ‘Buried Alive by Love’, including their cover of ‘Wicked Game’.
Times may change, but HIM will always put on a great performance. kerrangradio

рецензия на выступление Volbeat, HIM и All That Remains в Sound Academy, Toronto от 26 августа 2013 г. lithium magazine о HIM в частности:
Another fine evening of Volbeat's signature listener-friendly jams ended off an evening of rock diversity in Toronto, at the August 26th performance of Monster Energy's Rock Allegiance Tour. Rock Allegiance is a relatively new touring 'festival'; launched in 2011 as a travelling tour and became more of a destination festival in 2012. It came back as a touring bill, featuring HIM, All That Remains and Airbourne as supporting bands.
HIM's performance was a 15-song set, and at 70 minutes in length with a support group of dedicated Toronto fans, I'd call Rock Allegiance more of a co-headlining event between Volbeat and HIM. ... This night marked the first time I'd see HIM perform live. I know the band has been around for over two decades now, but somehow I'd either bomb seeing them, or some ailment would keep the band away from Toronto. I was excited to see frontman Ville Valo and his bandmates perform some back-catalogue, along with some material from the band’s eighth studio release, Tears On Tape. After a moody introductory wash of gothy organ music, the band took the stage and launched into 'All Lips Go Blue'. Right out of the gate, HIM's stage presence was noteworthy. Old material mixed seamlessly with new. A wonderful live rendition of 'Wicked Game' (Chris Isaak) came into play, and as obvious as it may be, I enjoyed it the most from the band, likely because I wasn't expecting to hear it. 'Your Sweet Six Six Six' and 'Into the Night' also came off impressively well this evening. ... HIM Setlist: All Lips Go Blue Buried Alive By Love Rip Out the Wings of a Butterfly Right Here in My Arms The Kiss of Dawn Hearts at War Join Me in Death Your Sweet Six Six Six Passion's Killing Floor Tears on Tape Wicked Game (Chris Isaak cover) It's All Tears (Drown in This Love) Soul on Fire Into the Night The Funeral of Hearts

Volbeat, HIM, All That Remains и Airbourne в Tulsa 31 августа 2013 года от The Audio Altar , в частности о HIM:
A goth couple dressed in black with copious amounts of eyeliner stood in front of 3 country frat boys in cowboy hats and plaid shirts. Elsewhere, a teenage girl was distraught by the fact that love-metal rockers HIM would not be signing autographs that night. She and her mother had been waiting in line since 9:00am, desperate for a chance to meet her favorite band. But only Volbeat and Airbourne were doing signings that day. Such was the makeup of the crowd at the Monster Energy Rock Allegiance Tour.
2013 marks the 3rd year of the tour- after moving to a destination festival format in Hershey, Pennsylvania in 2012, Rock Allegiance returned to its roots as a traveling show this year. I went to the gig in Tulsa on August 31st. Featuring a multi-national lineup including Danish band Volbeat, HIM from Finland, All That Remains from Massachusets, and Airbourne from Australia, the schedule promised a long night full of loud, diverse rock. ... If there was one downside to Saturday’s show- it was the lack of respect some in the crowd gave Finnish rockers HIM. Front man Ville Valo and crew put on an amazing show. Set against a backdrop featuring their iconic heartagram surrounded by a spiraling serpent, Valo simultaneously crooned and growled his way through a melodic set containing old favorites such as Buried Alive By Love, Right Here In My Arms and Funeral of Hearts, and tracks off their new album Tears on Tape. Despite his illness earlier this year that forced them to cancel the entirety of their brief North American tour, Valo seemed to be in good spirits and was smiling and joking around with his bandmates. However, during lulls in the set, drunk and unruly Volbeat fans threw around a few jeers. This is an obvious downside of touring with multiple bands vs. having a stationary festival. Despite the road crews’ best efforts, changing sets and equipment between bands is still a time consuming task. By the end of the night, most fans had been standing around for over 4 hours. Everyone was tired, cranky, and some people were just ready to see their favorite band and go home. Case in point- after HIM’s set, many heartagram-clad fans left en masse, leaving plenty of room for Volbeat’s fans to fill in the spaces in front of the stage.
But if you didn’t think HIM had a good show, then you clearly aren’t familiar with the band. No, they don’t run around the stage. Yes, they use moody lighting to set the tone. No, Valo won’t be headbanging- although it’s hard to top his screams when he really belts them out. If they seemed more subdued compared to the other bands, it’s because they are- but their followers wouldn’t have it any other way. All you had to do was look into the crowd to see the faces of entranced HIM fans singing along to every word of every song to know this is true.

HIM Embrace the Dark Side in ‘Into the Night’ Video By Amy Sciarretto September 4, 2013 12:43 PM
HIM aren’t the type of band to look at life through charcoal-colored glasses. In fact, HIM-approved specs are pitch black, you can’t see out of them and they are cracked right down the middle, further obscuring your vision and that’s just how they like it. In its new video for the ‘Tears on Tape’ track ‘Into the Night,’ the band takes back the night, which is fitting for these nocturnal creatures who are also Finnish musicians.
The video centers on the pale face and kohl-rimmed eyes of of singer Ville Valo, as he and his mates perform the song in the dark of night. He emotes passionately and he taps into some sort of visceral vein while performing. Everything shows in his face and in his eyes, for the HIManiacs to see.
The ‘Into the Night’ clip is also populated by hooded women, both young and old, and they work in concert to create a heartagram, which is HIM’s famous logo and is constructed of both a heart and a pentagram. The ladies carefully place the bricks and end up with a larger-than-life heartagram.
It’s a simple promo, but it reminds other children of the night out there that it’s okay not only to be comfortable with the dark side, but to embrace it as opposed to avoiding it.

Они играли громкую “All Lips Go Blue” с нового альбома “Tears On Tape”. Нагрели атмосферу с более старыми треками: "Buried Alive By Love», мелодичной “Rip Out The Wings Of A Butterfly” и “Right Here In My Arms”.
Это HIM.
- Каково это для тебя – играть такие старые песни, как, например, „Join me“ или „Right Here in My Arms“?

HIM & Italy by Alessia, Michela, Margherita and Alessandra Chronology of a love affair.. Lucky... a pretty unusual word I would use to describe myself, but in this case I think it is definitely the right one, since I had the rare chance to follow this band from its birth to the first steps throughout our Country. The first meeting between HIM and Italy happened 13 years ago, in November 2000 with three gigs in Milano, Roma and Cesena. Those amazing five guys coming from the cold Finland gathered a little group of dark supporters who wanted to witness with their own eyes and ears the band that a bunch of fine magazine reviews (first among them Psycho) defined the new wave of Northern Gothic Metal. From the intro notes of “Gone With The Sin” hot shivers ran through our spines and the whole audience went crazy. HIM were a total surprise and not just because of their frontman androgynous beauty, who was still unaware of his alluring charm back then, but above all because of their being able to arrange with simple chords songs that can move both the old and the new audience of fans still today, after so many years. The ones who were among the crowd that night can not forget the power of the rhythmic section of the bass player Migè and of the new drummer Gas (who had just replaced Patka Rantala) the incredible energy of Linde's guitar solos, the new emotion caused by Ville's deep and seductive voice and the delicate keyboard of Zoltan. Those five guys, half drunk and half hobos charmed the audience in a bit more than one hour and left us with this sensation of having witnessed something unique for the first time. Songs like Resurrection or The Heartless were the brighting stars in that November night. Most of European music magazines kept on talking about HIM and their second album “Razorblade Romance”, but they got to play in Italy in 2001, always in November and lacking of an adequate promotion, to perform in the same pretty tiny and smoky locations and in front of the same dedicated and committed audience, eager to see and hear them again. The band was touring with the third album “Deep Shadows And Brilliant Highlights”, and presented a bit more bohemien kind of style if compared with the last time they performed here. The main important difference is that they changed the line-up introducing us their new keyboard player, Burton, who preferred a softer and more classic oriented sound than the 80's one proposed by the former band member. That choice would have influenced HIM's future sound in the years to come. When I think back at those times I can recall Ville's appearently arrogant attitude to start singing turning his back to the audience, both because of his inner, instictive, typically Finnish shyness and of this new halo of “mysterious dark creature” that the international press had just created around his figure. It’s on the 7th of June 2003 and HIM return to Italy with a number of awards in their pocket after the release of their fourth album "Love Metal". The festival A Day At The Border of Milan save for them the honor of opening the Reverend Marilyn Manson, but something doesn’t work in the organization of the event. A little less than an hour before the show is announced that the performance of the American showman and our heroes find themselves on stage as headliners in front of an audience stunned, disappointed and not tolerant to Valo grins and him, on his side, will show first time the incapacity to manage his emotions, performing an embarrassing show for the poor audience remained. In the wave of the international success of "Love Metal", the band returns to Italy the following year (2004) with two dates, one in January at the Alcatraz in Milan and the other in June for the second edition of the Flippaut Festival in Bologna as support band of Korn. This time the music will be completely different, the American experience has clearly marked the style and attitude to perform in front of a demanding audience. So much that the first throw of fruits and vegetables by Korn fans, Ville replies from behind his mustache hawk: "Thank you but we already had lunch", giving to everyone (including metalheads) one of the best shows that even today I remember. 2005 is the year of "Dark Light" and the band is back on stage in Milan and Mestre, with an album that perhaps recorded the highest number of Italian fans and, I have to admit, my temporary absence from the extra music events of the band. I still remember the concert in Milan as a wonderful concentrate of sound and light , for one of the best interpretation of "Rip Out the Wings of a Butterfly" and for the atmosphere, full of adrenaline, maybe too much. The Alcatraz was full of people, very different fan than at the first performance, they paid more attention to the look of the singer than to his music. Ville & Co. after that night will make us wait for three years before returning in our country, in Milan and Florence. It's 2008, and it is precisely in the city of the lily that I try to rediscover the sensations experienced in the heydays. "Venus Doom" is an album full of passion and torment, but the performance of HIM is far from these atmospheres. I believe, and I say it reluctantly, to have witnessed one of the most ugly and undignified show for a rock band. Technically dull and devoid of personality and spontaneity, with a band listless, especially the leader, more interested in stuttering poems for young girls than to sing according to his potential. It 's very difficult for me to find a single positive note of that evening, and the silence that will fall on the band from then would have only fueled the fear of those who, like me, had witnessed the birth of something great, only to resign themselves to a slow and inexorable power off. Michela Marchi
HIM 15-10-13 MEET 'N' GREET REPORT Keep calm and... hug Valo (Milan- Tuesday, October 15th) “Ok, keep calm and breathe deeply, inhale, countuntilfive and exhale, alwayscountinguntilfive” ... mmm... I have some doubts this relaxing technique can work, but it seems to be the only solution coming to my mind to control this freakish tachycardia affecting me while walking my way to a destination named Alcatraz. Five years passed since HIM last performance in Italy. It was 2008 and they were promoting “Venus Doom”, but for me it is 12 years since the first time I saw them playing live in this same location. Back then “Deep Shadows And Brilliant Highlights” had just been released. Among the things coming through my mind about that night I rember that they were introduced onstage by Fratello Metallo, besides I can recall that Ville smoke at least two cigarettes during each song (including the ones fans threw him onstage) that thay did not come out for the encore, but that they played a very good gig. In the meanwhile my heartbeat doesn't seem to decrease, but it seems even to fasten when I reach Alcatraz doors: there's a very long queue of fans who seem to be there since the beginning of time. There are all the ingredients to make this night a really epic one. The atmosphere is full of pure excitement and while everybody's eyes are staring at the huge tourbus parked in front of the venue's entrance, mine, instead, are looking restlessly among the crowd to find the girls of “The Heartagram Path”, HIM's Italian Official Website. I'm very happy to meet them and to share with them the emotions of this event, a great one indeed, because it includes not only the show, but also the meeting among us, passionately dedicated to the cause in order to make this Italian site working and, above all, the very hard-earned, long awaited for and finally attained meet and greet with the band. It is not so professional to admit, but I spent a sleepless weekend thingking about that. The precious and rare chance to meet Ville, Migé, Linde, Gas and Burton in person killed my sleep, but I would lie if I told you that it was not worth the while. To the more or less twenty lucky accredited people, above all promoters, webmasters and journalists the five Finnish rockers dedicate thirty minutes of autographs, pictures and smiles. There is also place for emotion, moistened eyes, presents, hugs and fine small talks. Ville has catlike eyes, they are really charming and simply irresistible: their intense green can get you lost into them. He greets everyone very kindly and shakes everybody's hands, poses for pictures making his proverbial funny faces and signs cds, t-shirts, vynils, flags, but, above all he gives a lot of hugs, so many that I can even suppose he likes this latter part more than all the rest. Migé and Gas are the chattier ones: they are able to make us soon at our ease. They talk about their day in Milan and about the good pasta they ate at meal. The bass player has very deep blue and sweet eyes; the drummer seems to reply very gladly to all the people who keep on asking him about his health, because they had been so worried for his recent desease that they now are really enthusiast to see him there, safe and sound. Burton, who generally is hidden behind his keyboard set, seems the one of them who loves making jokes and tricks the most. He keeps on making incredibly funny faces to distract his bandmates and their fans while they are taking pictures. The blond guitar player, Linde, acts like a true gentleman and shots almost all the pictures kneeling down a bit to make some of us, pocket sized kind of girls, look less short, especially if compared with these five huge Scandinavians. When it is my turn to get to shake Ville's hand and meet his eyes I mysteriously find myself able to utter just monosyllabic sounds. All of a sudden it seems I forgot 20 years of English language and the few words I can say in Finnish. I am still pretty sure if he asked me my name I would have replied only after a bunch of seconds. Getting so close to be even able to hug him makes my synapsis collapse completely and my eyes water, but I do not complain at all, also because I totally did not expect him hugging me back so warmly. Damn cliché about the legendary Northern coldness... Luckily enough I start being able to speak again with the handsome Gas, to whom I confess it's my second HIM show, because I saw them in 2001 on that same stage and he naively remarks:“Wow! Quite a long time ago, we were really young back then!” Burton, with the hair gathered in a ponytail which makes him look even finer, keeps on showing me his tongue while I am taking pictures, so, if they are not usable, being too blurred it's because I am dying of laughter. As for Linde his incredibly long dreadlocks seem so soft I stare at him for a while too. Migé, vey kindly and nicely, suggests me to take a pic of the “Tears On Tape” CD cover, before the marker drips and signatures disappear. So, while the tour manager starts calling them back to reach their dressing rooms, he heartly recommends me to use the CD booklet next time. Next time? It seems to me such a unique chance that I just can't believe I could be so lucky to get to meet them so close twice, but, after all, what's wrong in reserving the right to dream? 20 p.m: drunk on dreams Five years. Five long years have passed since the last HIM shows in Italy, three not so memorable gigs in Milan , Florence and Modena in 2008. Many people, at that time, considered the band almost done, an hypothesis quite confirmed, later, by the long stop that followed the seventh album Screamworks : love in theory and practice . Drummer Gas Lipstick suffered in fact of a serious arm damage, and the band had to stay away for almost two years from stages and rehearsal places. It was therefore with great anticipation that fans welcomed the new album and, most of it all, the new tour. After a shaky start of the American tour, immediately stopped due to Ville Valo being ill, summer festivals , Rock Allegiance Tour and the beginning of the European tour witnessed a band in a very good shape. HIM are back, against all odds! The sidewalk in front of Alcatraz is already flooded with heartagrams since the early morning of October 15. Fans from all over Italy came to Milan to finally see their favorite band in their only Italian show . In an Alcatraz only half full , the symbol of Tears on Tape already dominates the stage when Caspian, support act for the entire European tour, go onstage. The band from Massachusetts had undoubtedly an arduous task: to entertain a demanding audience, not used to certain sounds and impatient to finally see their heroes after a long absence. It surely would have been a better move to pick up a band with a sounds a bit closer to the one of the five Finns, but despite this Caspian entertained the audience for nearly an hour, offering an excellent instrumental post-rock. It must be said that this time the sound system of the Alcatraz worked greatly, spreading across the huge room the massive sound of guitars and psychedelic synth that, little by little, brought everyone in an oblivious state of looseness. And here they are , finally! The roadies leave the stage , the lights go out and " Unleash the red" caress an audience in awe . For the first three songs ("All lips go blue" , "Buried Alive By Love ", " Wings of a Butterfly") I’m in the photo pit , perfectly aware that I should take pictures showing just a bit of professional attitude. I can’t do it, obviously. This evening has already been full of emotions and I can’t help myself from singing my heart out while shooting hundreds of photos . Leaving the photopit is heartbreaking , as usual. It’s never easy to attend the show of your favorite band from the last rows. Old songs and new alternate in a setlist that would definitely need some updating (where are the songs that made HIM’s history, such as " The Sacrament ", " In Joy and sorrow", "Resurrection " ? ) However, what immediately catches the eye is the perfect harmony between the five members of the band: Gas, behind the drumset, is nothing less of perfect; Linde's solos send shivers down the spine; Ville’s voice, accompanied by his acoustic guitar, is again deep and powerful, and Burton and Mige give something special at the sound of each song. The last half of the show gives the strongest emotions : "It's all tears" , with a tribute to the great Peter Steele, "Soul on Fire " masterly performed at the point you really can’t help yourself but sing along and jump, followed by the most beautiful version of "The Funeral of Hearts " that I've ever heard , and ending with the heartbreaking " When love and death embrace" that always makes me shed a few tears. In spite of those who considered HIM finished, in spite of those who want to find a fault even in the most beautiful things , HIM are back and in a perfect shape and mood , ready to enchant their audience again and give emotions like few bands really know how to. Thank you , guys! We really hope to see you again soon! Alessia Poldi
Chronicle of an unexpected front row Let's face it: life in the front row is not easy. Until now I was in the third, sixth, tenth row or climbing to the audio console. Never been in the first row. In the first row you suffer. The fence penetrates your elbows, stomach and shins, the speakers break through your eardrums, the lights blind you, people push you from all sides, you cannot breathe, smells of any kind and origin stick to you , and the big man of the security do not care when you beg for a sip, only one sip, of water. In the front row you risk to get something on your head: joker technicians improvise pseudo- magical interludes and throw off the stage everything, from paper to empty plastic bottles. Sometimes it rains plectrums, setlists and drumsticks, and it's open war to grab them. In the first row you meet a lot of people: old and new fans, guys who don't know why they're there, sulkily security men , friends you knew online only, and those who dwell near to your house that you never suspected were following exactly that one band that with a song solves you the problems of an entire bad day. In the first row you speak. Of past concerts, about how many times you have seen this band and the other one, about the support band and music in general. And about Finland. In the front row photographers two meters high and three wide stop in front of you and for you, little dwarf, there's a stiff neck right in the first quarter of an hour. When they leave, however, the view opens on the best show in the world. The one you're waiting for years and never thought you could see just two meters away. The one that's worth and will always be worth the effort to endure everything. Some pains are meant to be forgotten and the pleasure turns them into sweet memories and you evoke with nostalgia. In the first row you do not feel selfish at the thought of your boyfriend lost ten rows back, the same to whom you have entrusted your camera and who therefore has the duty to take a video of the whole concert so you can cover it again and again. You're there, you don't feel alone, you have your hands free to clap and between you and the band for once there are no screens. In the first row you have multiple heart attacks: the music makes your soul vibrate, you can almost hear the footsteps of the musicians on stage and the singer's voice invests you like a colorful and warm wind. You can catch every expression, every look the gods up there exchange and you think you can touch them. You have fun and feel yourself as the architect of their fun by the mere fact of being there singing out loud their songs. They play, sing, joke, sweat, move in and out of the scene: your universe shrinks to that small space that is the stage, nothing else you know and care because, despite everything, that universe tiny for others, to you seems to transcend all boundaries both physical and emotional. Note by note it expands and its power accompanies you, embraces you and comfort you for days. In the first row you dream of wildest dreams because music does miracles and one of those dreams come true just when you least expect it. In the first row you would love to have the space to bow down to those who gave you two hours of superlative life , but you don't have it and you end up screaming "thank you" in three different languages hoping to be heard among the applauses and cries of the crowd. Meanwhile, your brain takes a reminder : next time bring a sheet with the words "KIITOS/THANK YOU/GRAZIE" on it. A lot of things happen in the first row. All priceless: they remain in your eyes and light you up and make you look stupidly, unreasonably happy. This was my first time in the front row, at Alcatraz , with HIM on stage after five years that were missing from Italy. Those who come after will be second and third rows, this was the first first: beating heart of a perfect evening. Alessandra Gargiulo
With their eighth studio album, ‘Tears on Tape,’ HIM have had a busy year. The band recently wrapped up their North American Rock Allegiance trek with Volbeat and All That Remains and now they are on the road in Europe.
During their last date of their U.S. tour in Brooklyn, we had the chance to chat with singer Ville Valo about the tour and the connection he has with his friends and bandmates. Valo also spoke about recording ‘Tears on Tape’ and why he thinks classical music should be banned. Check out our interview with Ville Valo:
How has Rock Allegiance treated you?
It’s been well, how does a tour go? Let’s see nobody’s been ill, the bus only broke down twice, everything got fixed quick the rest of the bands have been nice.
How have you been? You had some health complications earlier in the year.
That was when we were supposed to be touring in May. It was supposed to be a record release tour, it was eight dates in 12 days. Right before the first date I got the starting of pneumonia and bronchitis and since I have asthma I wasn’t in tip top shape. The doc said I had to lie down for about six to seven days and then see if you need to take more antibiotics and stuff like that.
It wouldn’t make any sense for us to wait for a week to play the last two gigs and then not even be sure if we could pull those off. When it’s a longer tour maybe you can postpone a couple of gigs or you skip one or something like that but with the schedule being so tight, we couldn’t do it. Now we’re trying to figure out if there’s a way for us to come back next year to kind of make up for the lost ones. S— happens, thankfully stuff like that doesn’t happen too often. This tour has been tremendously successful health-wise to everybody.
It’s odd, normally for a European in an AC bus with carpet, everybody’s ill at some point so many germs flying about and long drives. It’s been very mellow. It’s odd playing outdoors, in Brooklyn, someone just told me it’s a Brooklyn waterfront – I thought it was a gig, in an indoor venue. I was just like “What the f—?”
This tour has been real interesting because there’s been a mixture of radio station sponsored festivals, then a couple of monster festivals. There’s been these outdoor amphitheaters in Arizona and then the next day it’s like an old theater in Kansas and then all of a sudden it’s a smallish sports arena and then it’s something like this. Every day it’s not the same old, same old which is exciting and also audience wise because at some places people go bananas for Volbeat and hate everybody else. Then at times people appreciate all the bands, it can go both ways which is cool because it keeps us on our toes.
Being with the same bandmates for so long, with recording the new album ‘Tears on Tape’ did you notice anything that surprised you about the other members in HIM or even yourself during the recording process?
I think there’s always something that happens, but the base of personalities are set in stone. They haven’t changed that much. Playing music is like playing pool, in a way that if you’re not a professional pool player – if you play pool for a while, you kind of get stuck on a level and then you take a couple weeks off and all of a sudden you start playing again and you’ve gained a level or two.
It’s better and nobody knows why, I guess you subconsciously do the work and with music it’s the same. For example Linde [Lindstrom] our guitar player, he hadn’t done anything [for a while] and then all of a sudden he’s up a level and that’s really cool to notice. It’s the same with vocals, sometimes you surprise yourself on how it works and there’s no rhyme or reason or any logical explanation behind it.
What we try to do now is try to create as fertile ground as possible for such paranormal events that take place. That’s the fun thing, those unexpected mistakes because that makes it lively and organic and it makes it sound like music. For a band member it feels magical because it’s not just painting by numbers.
With a few years being in between ‘Screamworks’ and ‘Tears on Tape,’ what was the most important thing you needed to consider when recording this new disc?
Well the reason it took such a long time was our drummer had several hand injuries, there was some nerve damage. It was pain injury or stress injury and all types of things so he wasn’t able to play properly for about eight months which meant I sat down more with the acoustic guitar and was working the songs a bit more and getting f—ed up and hanging about.
It was really stressful for the band because we didn’t know if he was going to get better which ended up in these philosophical sessions with the guys. What are we going to do, are we going to have somebody else join us or do we call it a day as a band? It was stressful, that probably the biggest difference with this album. When he got his hands in shape, we did rehearsals, we started playing and everything was nice. I think the main thing was that since we didn’t know what to expect, if he was going to recover or not, as he recovered fully then everyone was like super pumped up.
It felt good to be back like “F—in’ hell we can still pull off an album.” It was a relief for everyone in the band and around the band too because we probably weren’t the best husbands and boyfriends at the time, everybody was super pissed off. There’s always got to be, not tragedy but some sort of s— has to always hit the fan. This time it was [drummer] Gas [Lipstick's] stuff, other times maybe the material isn’t strong or someone just isn’t feeling it. It’s tough to get five people in the same state of mind and wanting the same thing.
A lot of HIM fans have been devotees for a long time. Some, like myself, since a much younger age when we didn’t even know what the heck love and connections between people really meant.
Wow, yeah, I’m still trying to figure that out myself. I think good music evokes something and lets your imagination lead and do half the work. Then it makes it worth it, it’s the same with cinema and books, sometimes it’s nice when the stuff is not overly explained. I grew up listening to Sabbath and stuff I didn’t have the slightest idea – I was there with a dictionary trying to translate some of the stuff that was out there.
You figure out your own stories and that’s half the beauty of music. That’s one of the reasons I don’t find religious music and political music too interesting. Obviously when there’s bands like Rage Against the Machine, back in the day, the energy was astounding but I still couldn’t relate. I could relate to the aggression but the lyrics, for that band, didn’t matter to me – it was just the full on force they had.
What would you say is the biggest misconception people may have about you or HIM as a whole?
I don’t know any, the more stories about a band, the better. A lot of things should be left unexplained, whether it be musically speaking or any other way. It changes from country to country and from state to state. I think maybe somewhere people think since we play melancholy and gloomy, doomy music that we are gloomy doomy individuals which is never the case especially if you know people from Paradise Lost, they’re funny as f—.
It’s the same with people from Carcass or any of them, we grew up with horror movies and with Sabbath and we like music to be forceful and a bit frightening and that’s important. All kinds of people go and see horror movies. At the end of the day all the serial killers listen to classical music, so that should be banned. [Laughs]
This bus looks pretty clean but what would you say is the weirdest thing on this tour bus?
We actually emptied the bus, there were a bunch of very odd looking…socks. I’m not sure for what they were used or when but they’ve been here for a month and a half.
For the second year running I found myself spending Halloween in the lavish and attractive setting of Camden, London’s KOKO venue. However compared to last year’s all-out and wonderfully corny, un-dead celebration with Wednesday 13, All Hallow’s Eve 2013 was a slightly more sombre and romantic affair. Finnish stars and national treasures, HIM had brought their gothic, deadly, mournful and unrequited love potions (or songs) into the city for what should have been a hugely memorable occasion on the final sold-out dates of their UK tour (a second London date was added soon after the first sold-out). However despite pulling out all the big guns from their mammoth twenty-year spanning catalogue and the show falling on the perfect night for a band of their fashion, the Lords of love’s time in the Capital fell a bit short of spectacular.
Before I get into the nitty, gritty details of the headliner’s performance, a big shout-out and recommendation goes to the utterly brilliant Caspian from Beverly, Massachusetts. Although I missed some of the post-rock sextet’s support slot for Ville and Co. what I did hear was stunningly beautiful and mesmerising. The instrumental band’s sprawling and all encompassing sound, which fits somewhere amongst the likes of Mogwai and This Will Destroy You, blew me away as soon as I walked in and joined the sea of black-clad lovers. ‘Gone in Bloom and Bough’ and ‘Halls of the Summer’ from their 2012 album, Waking Season (which has already been downloaded and spun a dozen times now) both use a contrasting combo of heavy percussion and sweeping guitars, which resonated throughout the venue’s vast space and quite literally stopped people in their tracks. Inspiring stuff. They're by no means a new band with three albums already under their belts, but with the exposure from this tour and a new EP on its way this month, it’s safe to say that they'll be blowing up in 2014 - and deservedly so.
Ok so moving onto the main attraction and the real reason everyone was there - HIM made their entrance to an expectedly big and roaring applause, for the most part because of their eponymous leader, Ville Valo who is arguably one of the most recognisable and loved frontman in modern rock’s history. With no introduction or greeting, they stormed straight into new track ‘All Lips Go Blue’ from their eighth and latest studio album, Tears On Tape; their singer appearing to not have aged in the slightest sporting his usual and beloved black ‘uniform’ of beanie, scarf and cardigan. Shrouded in an apt setting of ice-blue lighting and watched over by their famous (albeit updated) heartagram motif backdrop, the cool seasoned rockers sounded great and indeed revitalised after what has been an up-and-down past few years for the Scandinavians (Ville’s continued battle with alcohol and cigarettes and drummer Gas’s recent repetitive strain injury).
If Mr Valo is indeed clean now, it was evident in their faultless performance as classics like ‘Buried Alive By Love’ and ‘Right Here In My Arms’ benefited from perfect lead vocals; the singer’s immense range from the absolute lowest of lows to a high-pitched shriek shining. But for all the immaculate vocal melodies, slick guitar solos and army-regimented rhythms, there unfortunately wasn’t a hint of personality. Getting through around eight or nine songs before uttering even a ‘thank you’ made for a very strange experience as a spectator. I didn’t appear to be the only one feeling underwhelmed by the lack of crowd interaction but the ‘hardcore’ fans in their matching Valo-inspired attire appeared to be just happy to lap up the brooding synth of ‘Join Me In Death’ and ‘Your Sweet Six Six Six’ without noticing their idols' failure to directly engage.
“Oh he’s just always been chronically shy” observed one fan. And ok so I can forgive the fact that even after so many years in the business you can still get stage-fright, but it doesn’t really excuse the lack of real interest felt from the stage from the band as a whole, especially on such a literally frightfully good date in the calendar in which any other band would have taken full advantage of! But no exciting or spooky surprises lay in store for the Halloween party-goers and it was a case of ‘play the hits and put a few smiles on faces’. Admittedly the beautifully dark and twisted riff and haunting melody of their cover of Chris Isaak’s timeless hit ‘Wicked Game’ was brilliant and still is in my opinion one of the best rock covers of all time. And with a slightly extended version which included a lengthy guitar solo from Linde; his usual flailing golden dreads kept back in place, and a ‘spotlight’ of sorts on bassist Migé, it was a nice little touch.
A bigger reaction also came with the inclusion of the Love Metal (their 2003 breakthrough album) track, ‘Soul on Fire’ into the set with costumed super-fans making themselves known across the floor space, straddling friends shoulders and repeating every word like it was their dying wish. And the hopelessly romantic and acoustic-led balladry of ‘The Funeral Of Hearts’ went down predictably well, sounding crisp and seamless underneath the sparkly and suitably wintry lighting. This slight high point was then brought down a notch again by a very unusual and yet not that surprising choice of encore in the shape of the band’s first ever single, ‘When Love and Death Embrace’. The 1997 track, as are most HIM tracks, is a gloomy yet sweet song about desire and death and whilst it sounded great, its sad, slow and subdued melody made for quite an anticlimactic finish to the night.
Technically perfect but lacking in communication, HIM came and did what they were supposed to do but what should have been a really exciting night of nostalgic, gothic romance on Halloween became just a fun but not visually very engaging show of well-performed hits.
Camden is full of weirdos on any given night of the year. But, with tonight being All Hallows Eve’, well, it's all gone a bit mental. A drunk woman runs around dressed as a pumpkin a la Angus, Thongs And Perfect Snogging, a man in a superb Clockwork Orange get-up struggles with an ATM near McDonald’s. A couple of elderly gents eat face on a bench, but the fake blood creates the creepy illusion of face actually being eaten. Basically, it’s a lot like the backdrop to a Romero flick with a dash of Poe for good measure – the perfect setting for a HIM show.
Nevertheless, it's a bit disheartening to walk into KOKO and see an audience being bored shitless by Massachusetts post-rockers Caspian. A band with incredible musicianship and genuinely interesting songs should be an instant winner, but this crowd only had one thing on their mind, and it wasn’t 10 minute prog-masterpieces devoid of vocals.
By the time they finished, with a synchronised percussive orgy that involved all five members pelting the drums like something from a Sky TV advert, only a tiny portion of the audience remained genuinely interested. It’s a shame, as a crowd for Swans or Pelican would have found plenty to lap up.
Polite applause was soon replaced by swathes of disturbingly excited screams from the female attendees (and, to be honest, the blokes too) as HIM frontman/very pretty man Ville Valo sauntered on stage with his band, kicking things off with new track All Lips Go Blue. The Scandinavian goth rockers sounded glorious; Mikko Paananen in particular was an absolute beast, his thunderous bass acting as the embodiment of his gargantuan build.
Valo looked so out of place - a schoolboy amid a crowd of sixth-formers, Cheryl Cole at a Weight Watchers session. His vocals started out slightly wobbly, occasionally straying from the path of, well, being in tune. But by the time HIM kicked into Buried Alive By Love he'd found his feet, demanding crowd participation and generally looking and sounding like he could be arsed to do his job.
Set-wise, this was a HIM fan's wet dream. Following Buried Alive By Love came Wings Of A Butterfly, and then it was time for Right Here In My Arms. A lesser band would avoid a track order like this, saving the hits for the tail-end of the set. But HIM don't suffer from such a problem, their back catalogue is rammed full of tunes.
The title track to this year's superb 'Tears On Tape' opus went down just as well as timeless anthems such as Your Sweet Six Six Six – a testament to HIM's consistent song-crafting skills. Valo loosened up as the evening progressed, taking great amusement in switching from his trademark croon to an evil baritone drawl in It's All Tears (Drown In This Love).
HIM played with the utmost professionalism, sprinkling a shower of songs over London that most bands would be jealous of. The crowd was on hand to represent one of the most dedicated fanbases in metal music - they're sometimes a tad too enthusiastic, with a guy dressed as a zombie being ejected by security for hitting people - and on the first of two sold-out London shows, HIM proved that they are still painfully relevant. Over 20 years on, Valo's musical bulldozer shows no signs of slowing down.
The early 20th century, blood-red decor of the KOKO auditorium is reminiscent of a set from Dracula. On Friday night the theatre thronged with Halloween revellers and the gothically clad fans of one of Finland’s biggest musical exports – HIM. The opening act was Massachusetts-based post-rock band Caspian; a selection of their sweeping, “gothic” instrumental tracks set the mood for the evening.
The night’s big event was introduced by way of Unleash the Red, the first song from HIM’s latest album Tears on Tape. The evening’s performance featured a crowd-pleasing mixture of favourites like Your Sweet Six Six Six, Chris Isaac’s cover of Wicked Game and the classic Join Me in Death, as well as tracks from the 2013 studio album, including the hit title song.
The show was energetic, flashy and full of crunch. Singer Ville Valo’s seductive voice was accompanied by the virtuosity of guitarist Lily Lazer (Mikko Lindström) and bass player Mige Amour (Mikko Paananen). Both proceeded to show off their talents, cavorting in front of the band’s famous heart/pentagram logo during an instrumental solo that brought back the golden age of rock ‘n’ roll and musical free-wheeling of Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Van Halen (without guitar-smashing, though Lily Lazer did manage to hurl his across the stage). Indeed, these guys have in the past worked on a more typically rock ‘n’ roll album under the name of Daniel Lioneye and the Rollers, with the various band members reshuffled.
Characteristic brooding, so-called goth metal (or as the band prefer to call it “Love Metal”, playing on the two main themes of their music: love and death) shone through, with chilly synthesiser sounds recalling dark, Nordic winters. His Infernal Majesty delivered a cracking finale to the spooky Halloween festivities.

It has been a turbulent few years for the Finns. Leading into the recording of Tears On Tape, Ville Valo was battling some personal demons and drummer Mika Karppinen had to undergo physical therapy and take an extended sabbatical due to serious nerve damage to his hands and arms. The result was a typically candid and emotionally raw offering that was by some margin HIM’s strongest album in years, and a suitably melancholic soundtrack to some dark times for the band.

From this weeks Kerrang! short interview with Ville Valo during Sonisphere. The man from HIM's not drinking. But K!'s Ruskell discovered he's still a great pub partner. -That's a funny lookin' beer, Ville... "It's nonalcoholic Beck's. It's good substitute for real beer. It's not too dark. The best nonalcoholic beers are American, though". -Sounds tasty. So, are you having a good day? "Yeah, I am. But we arrived so late. We were stuck in traffic, and we arrived right before we were meant to go on. Then I discovered we were on the main stage. I thought we were gonna be in the tent. So that was a surprise that just added to the usual chaos of festivals". -How do you feel about being at Knebworth? "Good. It's one of the Meccas. Someone said this is where Queen played their last show with Freddie Mercury. And loads of other bands have done famous shows here, like Oasis and Led Zeppelin, even Robbie Williams played legendary show here. Even if you're not a fan, that's good going". -Glenn Danzio fell over onstage at the Finnish Sonisphere. That ever happened to you? "Yes, and it's like premature ejaculation. It's really embarrassing, and you're there going 'This never normally happens, I'm so sorry!". -You're a Sabbath nut. Are you annoyed they're playing in London and you're here? "Tough one. I saw them in Helsinki and they were great. But this is me at Knebworth. If Sabbath were here, I's insist on staying and miss any flights we had to catch. But Electric Wizard are here, who carry on the Sabbath spirit". -They've said they've seen you in the front row of Electric Wizard gigs in Finland, singing along... "Yeah. And I was out of my head. I was so fucked up that, like, a year later, I only just remembered I was at the show. People were talking about it and I was going, 'I heard that was a great show.' They were all going, 'Yeah, you were there.' Anyway, in the absence of Black Sabbath, they're very good."

Тогда хэдлайнерами должны были выступить Faith No More.

Next to Peter Steele of “Type O Negative” no one has a voice that sets the tone of the season quite like Ville Valo of “HIM”. From the opening guitar lick you know that you’re in for an emotional gothic journey. The best way I can put this is the band got together and decided to write love songs for the graveyard. Also included in this release are two fantastic cover songs. The first of which is a cover of “Wicked Game” by Chris Isaak. This song is, hands down, one of my favorite tracks to listen to as I start an October day. The original is haunting enough but HIM takes it to that next level of gothic metal! The second cover, often confused with Gus’s cover of the same song, “Don’t Fear the Reaper” is just as great, substituting the classic guitar riffs for a more synthy sound. My favorite HIM album and a great album to get you into a darker spirit!

Wacken Open Air 2011 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vy5UgEVT48Y

Trapped In Autumn.
